Abstract: The effect of the size of weld repair excavation of the defective portion of main gas pipelines on the metal cooling rate after preheating in the process of weld build-up repair is studied. The parameters of the heated portion cooling during preheating for patch repair are measured. The calculated and experimental values are compared. The need to regulate the maximum duration of the interoperation period according to excavation parameters, ambient temperature and method of heating is shown
