Study of clay cap seal in the process of oil and gas field development

Authors: Valery M. DOBRYNIN is Professor of the Department of Well Logging of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. His fields of study are: stud patterns of deformation of oil and gas reservoirs in in-place conditions and changes in their physical properties. Andrey V. GORODNOV is Associate Professor of the Department of Well Logging of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas. In 1978 he graduated from Gubkin Moscow Institute of Petrochemical and Gas Industry. Among his scientific interests is interpretive modeling of well logging. He has more than 60 published works. Valeriy N. CHERNOGLAZOV is Associate Professor of the Department of Well Logging of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, he is Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. In 1975 he graduated from Gubkin Moscow Institute of Petrochemical and Gas Industry. His scientific interests include petrophysical modeling of geological processes. Olga P. DAVYDOVA is postgraduate student of the Department of Well Logging of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas. Alexey V. MITIN is Associate Professor of the Department of Exploration Geophysics of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas. In 2008, he graduated from Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas. His research includes acoustic and seismic methods well investigation, WWW modeling, building 3D rock model from log data. Abstract: According to the results of repeated studies by neutron methods the seal effect of the clay cap overlying the deposits developed in the depletion mode under reduced reservoir pressure was identified. A mathematical model of water filtration and clay sealing that calculates the change in pore pressure in the cap and reduction of clay porosity was developed. The amount of water forced out of the clay cap into the formation for a single production well operating under a long-time drawdown is evaluated.
