Abstract: The problem of localizing and estimating the volume of leaks in oil transporting pipelines is studied. The task of estimating is considered in the framework of a class of optimal control problems. Analytical formulas for the functional gradient of the problem are obtained. These formulas allow to solve the problem using numerical methods of optimization of the first order. Some results of numerical experimentsare presented.
